Smart Clamp

Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Goal of the internship

The goal in this internship is to design and develop a small drilling station based on commercial robot and a patented product in Flanders Make referred to as ‘Smart Clamp’.
This clamp system would allow an ‘active’ adjustment of the work piece (part to be drilled for instance) in order to compensate for deflection / bending of the part that would result to bad quality.
The ‘smart clamp’ system has already been successfully tested in CNC machines, and also as a lab demonstrator using a linear motor as illustrated in the picture below.

In this internship we would like to prove the use of this Smart clamp in a more flexible drilling unit that could easily be moved from one location to another. One of the options is to integrate the smart clamp unit on a AGV with robot arm (Kuka KMR+IWA) as depicted below and develop an attractive demonstrator showing that we can machine a large part with good quality, but high flexibility.

Profile student
