Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Goal of the internship

Due to ever more stringent regulations, car manufacturers are exploring the possibilities of hybrid fuel-electrical drivelines. Well known examples are the series and parallel hybrid architecture.

Yet, the number of combinations that can be generated by combining existing driveline components (electrical/combustion engines, gearboxes, CVTs, hydraulical/electrical/chemical storage elements, ...) is so large (typically > 10^5) that designers cannot model and analysis them wrt. performance, cost, etc. manually anymore.

Computational Design Synthesis (CDS) is the difficult word that some people use to refer to describe the process of using computation power to help in creating and evaluating the possible component combinations and selecting the set of most promising design candidates.

The goal of this internship is to trade-off Flanders Make's current software tools for the CDS of hybrid drivelines (implemented in matlab/simulink), with some open source new-kids-on-the-block :

  • Languages (python, julia. ...) and their specific extensions for optimisation;
  • browser-based designer interfaces such as JupyterLab.

Trade-off criteria will be visualisation capabilities, ease-of-parallellisation and high-performance computing, designer UI experience, ...

Learning target :

You will learn about the fundamentals of Computational Design Synthesis and optimisation.

Profile Student

  • Bachelor degree in mechatronic engineering;
  • Desired skills:
    • Knowledge of fundamental concepts of constraint programming, optimization theory and optimal (closed-loop) control of mechatronic systems, and
    • Previous programming experience with Casadi, Python or Julia (optimization extensions) using Jupyter notebooks
      are highly recommended;
  • Passionate about research and new technologies with focus on applications for machines or mechatronic systems;
  • Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
  • A good communicator, able to communicate in English;
  • Eager to learn and a team player.

Practical Data

This assignment is an internship, but can also be executed by a thesis student from a local university.

The assignment is for minimum 4 months to maximum 6 months and takes place at the offices of Flanders Make located in Leuven, Belgium.

For internship :
All software and hardware needed for the execution of the project will be provided by Flanders Make.
