Simulation Engineer Mobile Robots
Autonomous mobile robots have a lot of potential. In line with industry 4.0, complex functions can be automated and we see an increase in flexibility, safety, productivity, quality and/or we reduce costs. Autonomous working functions (e.g. a gripper to pick products) are more flexible when mounted to autonomous driving platforms.
Additional challenges arise w.r.t. the design (e.g. how to ensure a fast and safe collaborative motion). Flanders Make researchers tackle these challenges on industry cases with new system architectures, delivering a working proof of concept.
Simulation of Autonomous Motion Systems
As an expert or young potential in modelling and control of autonomous systems:
- you work together in a team which combines expertise in signal processing, adaptive & learning control, embedded software, robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence;
- with the team you add new autonomous functionalities to prototypes,
- where you focus on decreasing the development time with virtual validation tools.
More concretely, for a variety of industrial cases (autonomous drones, mobile robots, tractors, forklifts), you will:
- Translate the end-users needs to relevant test cases, key performance indicators and requirements;
- Validate the sensing and control software and optimise the total cost of ownership (reliability, efficiency, flexibility,…) by using virtual validation tools (AirSIM, Unreal, Engine);
- Apply model identification techniques to ensure a valid vehicle model which is used in your simulation framework;
- Link virtual validation tools to hardware to create a HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) setup;
- Test the autonomous driving and working software in a virtual simulation environment.
Experienced engineers will also trace and present industrial challenges and research opportunities or coach young engineers and lead projects.

You are
- Result oriented, responsible, self directing and team player;
- A good communicator;
- Passionate about research and new technologies;
- Eager to learn, eg. multiple simulation tools;
- Strong in analytical skills.
Offer
- A challenging job, working with experts in various fields, using state-of-the-art infrastructure for autonomous systems, machine & vehicle dynamics, predictive control, data analytics, software prototyping;
- An open company culture with short communication lines;
