Multi - Body Simulation Researcher Dynamics/Kinematics for multi-body for machines with multiple powertrains

You optimise mechanical parameters for complex motions within combined powertrains. You come up with new concepts for the next generation of energy-efficient machines and optimise the control of 3D coordinated motions.

For the next generation of machines, machine builders are looking for innovative concepts to make their products work faster, more accurately and more energy-efficiently. Through the simulation & control of coordinated motion systems, you can radically improve machines with multiple powertrains in terms of performance, cost and energy consumption. You map peak forces and energy consumption, predict the mechanical behaviour of moving components and coordinate multiple motions.

Simulation of coordinated motion systems

As a researcher with experience in mechanical simulations in the field of kinematics, dynamics and 3D modelling, you will:

  • Collaborate within a small research team with expertise in mechanics, mechatronics, control engineering, intelligent control software and the mechanical construction of prototypes;
  • Lead the way in 3D modelling and in the simulation of coordinated motions of multiple powertrains with flexible components and complex contact dynamics;
  • Set to work with the structural design of various use cases and industrial machines, such as compressors, looms, robots, etc.

More concretely, you will:

  • Analyse structural loads and dynamics, focusing on the bottlenecks (peaks);
  • Improve the control of machine motions (Python, Matlab, Simulink);
  • Plan the motion trajectories using 3D modelling software (Simcenter 3DSiemens – Robotran – Matlab/Simscape Multibody);
  • Re-conceive the system as a whole (e.g. physical parameters of components, e-flow, performance);
  • Explore new opportunities. You will be the point of contact within and beyond Flanders Make for your field of expertise;
  • Enter into technical discussions with the representatives of the companies participating in the research;
  • Work out and carry out validation experiments together with the team.

Creative mechanical researcher with practical insight

You have:

  • Extensive technical expertise in kinematics and dynamics (structural design, structural analysis, stress analysis, materials science, machine drives);
  • 5-10 years of experience in dynamic mechanical modelling and control (Matlab, Simulink, Python);
  • Practical experience in modelling software for 3D coordinated motions (Simcenter 3DSiemens, Robotran, Matlab Multi-Body or Simscape Multi-Body);
  • Technical insight in practical applications. You spontaneously identify the physical reality behind the model;
  • Affinity with the design of machine or vehicle powertrains & their system architecture.
