Flanders Make

Control and integration of multiple AGV’s in a flexible assembly environment

Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Flanders Make has the infrastructure to a build a reliable, flexible next-generation industrial manufacturing environment. The goal is to allow companies to prototype "flexible assembly systems" on an industrial scale. Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) will be added to further extend the possibilities of the system.

Goal of the internship

  • Set up a transportation framework based on openTCS and control two AGVs.
  • Integrate, link and interact with the existing flexible assembly control framework.

Learning target:

    • How flexible assembly systems can be controlled;
    • How autonomous transport systems can be controlled;
    • How to drive and operate an AGV;
    • Work with the hard- and software of multiple AGVs;
    • What is path planning, order scheduling and how do they tie together ?
    • Setting up multiple (java) software components in an open environment;
    • How different control frameworks can interact;
    • Use multiple programming languages (java, python, c++ …) on different operating systems.

Profile of the student

  • Bachelor Degree in computer sciences, electrical, control or mechatronic engineering;
  • Some knowledge of linux operating systems and networking is recommended;
  • Knowledge of java;
  • Passionate by research and new technologies with focus on applications for autonomous guided vehicles;
  • Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
  • A good communicator, able to communicate in English;
  • Eager to learn and a team player.
