Integrating a Digital Assistant into Mixed and Virtual Reality Platforms
Flanders Make
Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.
Problem Context
At Flanders Make, a prototype digital assistant has been developed to support operators in performing assembly tasks. Currently, this assistant uses a projection system to display work instructions directly in the workspace. To further enhance its capabilities, Flanders Make has developed tools for presenting digital work instructions in Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) environments. These tools are compatible with devices like the Microsoft HoloLens, Meta Quest, and other MR/VR platforms.
Goal of the internship
The goal of this internship is to integrate the digital assistant into one or more of these MR/VR platforms. This involves developing and implementing solutions that allow the assistant to function seamlessly in immersive environments, improving operator interaction, and ensuring robust and adaptable support across different hardware and software ecosystems.
Learning target
By working on this project, you will:
- Gain hands-on experience with MR/VR platforms, including tools like the Microsoft HoloLens, Meta Quest, and/or others.
- Learn how to integrate a digital assistant into diverse MR/VR environments to provide real-time, immersive operator support.
- Develop expertise in MR/VR application development using software development kits (SDKs) and frameworks such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
- Explore and design intuitive user interactions for immersive environments tailored to operator tasks.
- Validate the integration through testing on real-world assembly setups.
The work will be carried out in Flanders Make Leuven, using state-of-the-art MR devices on premise.
